How to Choose a 3D Printer

Build volume

Start with the largest part you need to print in one piece. Desktop-format printers suit most prototypes, while large-format machines avoid splitting and joining big parts.

Materials

Engineering materials such as ABS, ASA, PC and nylon print more reliably in an enclosed printer with a heated chamber. Check which materials each model supports before you buy.

Workload

For occasional prototypes a professional desktop printer is usually enough. For production tooling, large parts or continuous jobs, an industrial system is the better fit.
